Service professionals like accountants, lawyers, doctors, therapists, and more can all benefit from internet marketing if they do it right. If you're a professional who's ever said "advertising doesn't work for my type of business," then listen up, because I'm about to share the exact ways that I help my professional clients get more business online. This isn't theory, it's real experience from real businesses ... so let's get started.

Use Plenty Of Social Proof

I'll start with this tip because it's absolute critical to persuading potential customers to become your new client. If you're not familiar with social proof, it can be simply defined as "what others say about you." This can be in the form of a testimonial, an online review, a video on your website with another client telling about their experience with your business, and more. Just think about social proof like this; every time someone says something positive about you, you need to incorporate that into your marketing as many ways as possible. For example, don't send your customers to Google Places to put a review of your services without having a link on your website that says "check out our amazing customer reviews on Google Places" so your prospective customers can see those reviews and allow them to be persuaded to use your services.

Don't Forget These Other Proof Elements

Social proof is so easy to achieve in marketing, that it should be your first step. But after that, don't forget about all the other proof elements that you can incorporate into your website, emails, Facebook page, etc that will influence people to trust your brand. You need to include things like awards, certifications, licenses, writeups about your business in the local newspaper, affiliations, Better Business Bureau logos, Chamber of Commerce certificates, etc. Anything you can get your hands on to add credibility to your business will help convert more browsers to buyers through your website.

Get Social

Use Facebook, Twitter, and email to consistently reach out to your customer base and build relationships. I often hear from business owners that "internet marketing won't work for my business because my industry is different ... we get all our business from referrals." That's a load of baloney. What do you think Facebook is besides a huge referral network where free word of mouth advertising runs rampant? By integrating social media with your website, and getting active on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, you're effectively building buzz through free word of mouth advertising to drive new customers to your business. And all of this happens on the internet, and it will work for your business, too.

Internet marketing can be wildly effective for professionals. If you're scared that it won't work for you, then I suggest that you stick your toe in the water with a professional website and pay per click advertising campaign where you have total control of the budget.

We are going to have a look at a scenario here about a problem many people face when starting an online business to see if we can drive home a point.

To start a franchise today can cost several thousand, or even several million dollars. The people who start their own franchise are extremely committed to the success of it due to the amount of money they have invested.

They stand to lose a tremendous amount of money if their business is not successful. This certainly affects their attitude towards the business and the way they get up and go to work every day.

Now contrast this to starting an online business. Many online businesses can be started for free.

Others may cost a few dollars, a few hundred dollars, or maybe even $1000 or more. For the most part this is not a financial strain on the people who choose to do it.

Ultimately what happens is the way they work their online business is reflective of how much they have invested into it. It is very easy for the people who start an online business for free to slacken off and not work on a consistent basis. So what it boils down to is that they will not make it a success because they are not committed to doing the work required.

Even people who invest $1000 to get started may easily give up if they find it harder to be successful than they had anticipated. This is because it is not painful to lose the amount of money they have invested.

To contrast that, there are numerous examples of people making a full time living online today. These people were able to start their business online without spending much money at all. These are people who are committed to making their online business work.

The time that it takes to be successful is what they are willing to invest. If you do not have a lot of money, and you have more time then that is the investment you must make to be successful with your business, remember time is money.

People who are able to grasp this concept are able to go on and become successful because they will do whatever it takes. Starting an online business and running it requires work and they quickly become aware of this but the rewards are worth it to them.

So, to sum up, it ultimately comes down to knowing why you started your online business and how hard you're willing to work to achieve success, whether you invest a lot of time of a lot of money.

The Most Successful Online Business
by James Debono

First let me give you a hint. It’s not the number of friends, followers or fans they have, the number of circles they are in or even how fancy the website is. The most successful online businesses are those that are run by business people and entrepreneurs that are clear on their reasons for starting the business in the first place and have a clear vision of where the business will be five years down the line.
Pushing all that aside there are 3 essential skills that the most successful online businesses practice and they are:

Relationship Building

Back when Internet marketing started, it was such a novelty that it didn’t take much to get a customer’s attention. There were so few business online, that just having a presence was enough to be found.

There was no need to cultivate relationships, after all, you never spoke to or met these internet customers, so what was the point. Hit them fast and hard with some compelling sales copy and before they had time to realize what was going on, they had already doled out the $99 and that was it, job done!

Today’s customers are much more discerning and savvy. The average customer will conduct thorough research before they commit to purchasing anything and as a result will interact with your business multiple times before they take the relationship to the next level.
Marketing, both offline and online are very much back to basics – it’s all about building online communities and fostering great relationships, earning the trust and respect of your peers and potential customers alike by sharing valuable information.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is a process of sharing valuable information with your community that helps them to solve many of their own problems. It’s not intended to replace the services or products that you offer, but to illuminate your capabilities.

The most common concern is giving away so much that your prospects don’t need to take the relationship to the next level and invest in you. That is indeed possible, but it’s a challenge you have to overcome in order to expand your circle of influence in your niche.
The true intent of content marketing is to qualify your prospects, ease the sales campaign and in effect make them better buyers of your products and services. Content marketing is not selling – it is using creative marketing strategies to position yourself as a key person of influence with those you can best serve. This is why the best form of content marketing is honest and authentic.

If you provide compelling content that educates, entertains and informs, it will you humanize your business, and enhance you trust.

Direct Marketing

The next tactic that the most successful online businesses practice is direct marketing. Direct marketing is copywriting that serves to elicit an action, such as picking up the phone to call your office, purchasing your product online, or visiting a landing page on your website.
At this stage of the relationship this is where the real benefit of the relationship and the content marketing really take hold. The customer should now see you as a trusted advisor in your field, they should be comfortable reviewing your content and as such see value in your recommendations or offers.

Throughout this process the most successful online businesses consistently move their community to act in some way, because every time they get their community to take action, it conditions them to doing it again.

The most successful online businesses have mastered these essential skills to create long term profitable business relationships, not the one hit wonders of the past. The question is do you practice these important tactics? And If not, why not?

To get a grasp of the importance of online marketing we really need to back up and get some historical perspective on the issue and then bring it forward to present times in a straight forward easy to understand language that really highlights the critical aspects of online marketing. Looking back at history and some of the major technological advances of the day we can get an idea of where and how history will repeat itself in modern day, all we need is a little foresight and some hard facts.

Take a look back into the 1800’s when the industrial revolution was taking place and some major technological breakthroughs of the day were revolutionizing different industry’s which affected the economy as a whole. Look at the steam engine which was converted into gasoline power and later perfected on the assembly line by none other than Henry Ford himself. He was able to go from making a few cars a day to mass production of the “model T” in a very short time making his product more readily accessible to the public for much less than that of his competitors. What did this mean to the current economy? Well if you were a farmer plowing your fields by hand and watching one of these strange contraptions rolling by it meant that you could probably imagine that if someone could figure out how to hook up a plow to one of those cars that it might take less people to do your current job. And that’s exactly what happened. The tractor was born and was able to do the work of a hundred men with one machine.

This was one major advancement of the day and for the people that could see the changes in the economy coming were better prepared to position themselves to capitalize on it. Another was the advancement in electricity and electrical appliances. People were now able to buy appliances that greatly reduced their workload and no longer needed to rely solely on coal or oil to heat and light their homes. A majority of the people either didn’t understand or care to take advantage of the changing economy. From farm to factories, and from man power to production lines were the major shift in the economy and many people unwilling to or unable to make the shift from the old way to the new way of technology lost their farms and had to go to work in the factories now just to survive.

Let’s jump up to just a few years ago to a man named Paul Zane Pilzer. For those of you who don’t know who he is let me explain. Pilzer is an economics expert and has been an adviser to many presidents, he is the only economist who predicted that the internet was going to revolutionize the world and that the next economic age is going to be the age of the entrepreneur. He predicts that by the year 2016 that 10 million new millionaires will be created through direct selling because of the internet and that if you don’t have an internet based business by the year 2012 that you might as well be out of business because you are going to get slaughtered in the new way of marketing.

Just like the farmers and coal miners of old there will be a shift in the economy. And you and I both know plenty of people who can’t grasp the importance of changing with the times so that we don’t lose our farms so to speak. If you can look far enough ahead to realize that the internet is going to be the only way to do business in a short while if you’re not using it you won’t be able to compete, just like the 100’s of farm workers that were replaced by one tractor couldn’t compete with the new technology of the time.

If you don’t understand the importance of marketing online and start getting some knowledge in that area now then when the shift takes place it will be too late to do anything about it and you’re going to be on the back side of the learning curve working for someone else rather than making your own money. I can’t stress this enough, if you would like some more in dept h history of what I’m talking about or would just like to get a better understanding of where our economy is headed then I recommend picking up any book by Paul Zane Pilzer. He is light years ahead of anyone else you are going to talk to in this category.

Let’s face it maybe a year or two ago it would have been easy to brush this information to the side as nonsense but looking at the current economic situation as a whole it’s pretty evident that times are changing and we had better change with them in order to survive. With all the jobs being lost and outsourcing to other country’s going on your best bet is to understand the importance of marketing online and implement those business practices if you plan on having a business in the years to come.
